If your child feels anxious about the dentist, you’re not alone.

Many children feel nervous, fearful, or overwhelmed during dental visits. Some are simply too young to sit comfortably through treatment. Others may need more extensive care.

Our goal is simple:

To help your child receive the care they need in the calmest, safest, most comfortable way possible.

We offer three levels of sedation, depending on your child’s needs.

FIRST RESPONSE GUIDE

What to Do

Before You Arrive

If your child has a dental emergency,

follow these steps while you call our office:

Knocked-Out Tooth

1.  Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the

root). Do not scrub it.

2.  Gently rinse with water if dirty. Do not dry

it.

3.  Keep it moist — in milk, saline, or between

cheek and gum (if your child is old enough).

4.  Call us immediately and head to our

office. Time is critical.

Severe Toothache

or Swelling

1.  Rinse your child’s mouth gently with warm

water.

2.  Apply a cold compress to the outside of

the cheek to reduce swelling.

3.  Do not place aspirin directly on the gums

or tooth.

4.  Call our office right away. Infections can

worsen quickly in children.

Chipped or

Broken Tooth

1.  Save any broken pieces if possible and

rinse with warm water.

2.  Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10

minutes.

3.  Call South Gaston. We’ll assess whether

it’s urgent and guide next steps.

Don’t Wait - We respond to pediatric emergencies promptly

The Two Levels

of Sedation

We’ll recommend the option that keeps your child the most calm, safe, and comfortable based on their age, health, and treatment needs

Level 1

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Best for: Mild nervousness or anxiety

  • Helps your child relax while remaining awake

  • Safe and commonly used for children

  • Wears off quickly after the appointment

  • Your child can return to normal activities the same day

This is often perfect for children who just need a little help feeling calm.

Level 2

General Sedation

  • Recommended for complex treatment or specific medical needs

  • Your child sleeps completely through the procedure

  • Performed in a setting with higher level medical supervision

  • Continuous monitoring by trained medical professionals

  • Used when treatment requires a higher level of medical supervision

This option ensures the safest environment for children who require advanced medical support during treatment.

Our Goal Is Simple

We want every child who walks through our doors to feel safe, welcomed, and cared for — and every parent to leave with peace of mind.

At South Gaston Pediatric Dentistry, our goal is to make quality dental care a positive experience from the very first visit, building healthy habits and confident smiles that last a lifetime.

Your child’s safety is always our top priority.

Every sedation option is carefully selected based on your child’s health, age, and treatment needs. We take time to explain everything, answer your questions, and make sure you feel completely comfortable before moving forward.

Our team is specially trained to care for children and ensure a calm, positive experience.

Common Questions Parents Ask Us

We want you to feel fully comfortable before your first visit. Here are answers to what parents ask us most.

How quickly can you see my child for an emergency?

We make every effort to see emergency cases the same day, often within hours of your call. When you call our office, let the front desk know it’s an emergency and describe what’s happening — we’ll get you in as fast as possible.

What if my child’s baby tooth gets knocked out? Is that still an emergency?

Yes — but baby teeth are typically not re-implanted, as it can affect the developing permanent tooth. That said, you should still call us right away. We’ll examine your child to make sure there’s no underlying injury to the gum or jaw and give you guidance on what to expect next.

Should I go to the emergency room or call your office first?

For dental emergencies — toothaches, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, or mouth injuries without heavy bleeding — call our office first. We’re equipped to handle pediatric dental trauma and can often see your child faster than an ER. If there is significant bleeding that won’t stop, a head injury, or signs of a broken jaw, go to the emergency room immediately.

My child is very anxious about dental visits. Can you still help them in an emergency?

Absolutely. Working with anxious children is something our entire team is trained and experienced in. We use calm communication, gentle techniques, and a child-friendly approach even in urgent situations. Your child’s comfort is always part of the care.

Will my insurance cover emergency dental visits?

Most dental insurance plans include coverage for emergency visits. Call our office and we’ll help verify your benefits before or during your visit so there are no financial surprises on top of an already stressful day.

What if the emergency happens after hours?

Please call our office number at any time — our voicemail provides guidance for after-hours emergencies, including when to seek immediate care. We monitor urgent situations and do our best to connect with families in need as quickly as possible.

Common Questions Parents Ask Us

We want you to feel fully comfortable before your first visit. Here are answers to what parents ask us most.

What age should my child have their first dental visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by age 1, or within six months of their first tooth coming in. Starting early helps us catch any potential concerns and — most importantly — makes going to the dentist feel completely normal for your child.

What if my child is nervous or has had a bad experience before?

This is one of the most common things we hear, and it’s exactly what we specialize in. Our team uses kid-friendly language, a calm environment, and a patient approach to help even the most anxious children feel at ease. We never rush, and we always let your child set the pace.

Do you accept new patients?

Yes! We are currently welcoming new patients of all ages — from infants to teens. We’d love for your family to become part of the South Gaston community. Give us a call or reach out online to get started.

What insurance plans do you accept?

We work with most major dental insurance plans and are happy to help you navigate your coverage. Please call our office and we’ll verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises.

What should I bring to my child’s first appointment?

Just bring your insurance card, any relevant medical history or allergy information, and your child’s positive attitude! We’ll take care of the rest. Our team will walk you through every step of the first visit before it begins.

How often should my child see the dentist?

For most children, we recommend visits every six months for cleanings and checkups. However, based on your child’s individual needs, we may suggest a different schedule — which we’ll always discuss with you openly.

Sedation Questions Other Moms Ask Us

If you’re feeling nervous, that’s completely normal. These answers can help you feel more prepared before we meet in person.

Is sedation safe for children?

Yes. Sedation is carefully planned and monitored to ensure your child’s safety and comfort.

How do I know which option my child needs?

We evaluate your child and recommend the safest and most appropriate option.

Will my child feel pain?

Sedation is designed to ensure your child remains comfortable throughout treatment.

Can I stay with my child?

In most cases, yes. We want both you and your child to feel as calm and supported as possible, and we’ll let you know exactly what to expect on the day of treatment.

Will my child remember the visit?

With options like oral sedation and general anesthesia, children often remember very little or nothing at all about the procedure, which can help prevent future dental anxiety.
